Modal shift (rail transportation/marine transportation)

Switching some of truck or air transportation to rail or marine transportation will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Modal shift is not simply a matter of switching transportation mode. They should optimize the customer’s transportation route from an origin of shipment to a designated destination by combining truck, rail, and marine transportation while satisfying the customer’s needs. With the optimum transportation mode that reduces dependence on truck transportation, difficulties in securing an adequate number of trucks arising from a shortage of truck drivers can be avoided.

The figure illustrates a modal shift to rail transportation.

Modal shift (vibration simulation service of rail freight transportation)

We offer a vibration simulation service of rail freight transportation to companies considering shift to rail transportation.

As a measure to reduce CO2 emissions for addressing climate change, shift from truck or air transportation are attracting interest. Above all, rail freight transportation is gaining the spotlight. The logistics industry is falling into a serious shortage of truck drivers because of the aging of the drivers and the overtime work cap regulations with penalties to be applied from 2024 in Japan. The rail freight transportation which has a higher transportation capacity in one-car train than a truck is expected as a solution to the shortage of drivers.

We offer the vibration simulation service of rail freight transportation to companies considering shift to rail transportation. With the service, you can examine possibilities of damage to products during rail transportation and determine excessive packages to be avoided. By reducing the packaging materials to be used, for example, you can consequently reduce the environmental load.

【Service overview】

  • The vibration simulation of this service is compliant with JIS Z 0232:2020.
  • By acquiring actual transport waveforms with a data logger and inputting the data directly into a vibration simulator, it is possible to reproduce vibration and shock that actually occurred.
  • We provide optimum evaluations by scheduling testing on the actual transportation route.
  • Accelerated tests (level up - test time reduction)based on JIS E 4031:2013 can improve the efficiency of evaluations.

Environmentally friendly packaging design

We propose packaging design that is environmentally friendly and appropriate for the characteristics of the customer’s products, making full use of our accumulated knowledge of packaging design.

The basic function of packaging is to protect the packaged items from a variety of environmental conditions, such as external forces in transportation, until it is ultimately delivered to end users.

Inadequate packaging cannot serve this function, and excessive packaging will go to waste. The waste of packaging materials has a great influence on storage space and transportation efficiency.
Appropriate packaging leads to reduction in materials to be used, the cost of materials, and the storage and transportation costs, consequently improving the transportation efficiency and contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

With our accumulated knowledge, we propose packaging design that is appropriate for the characteristics of the customer’s products and environmentally friendly.

Key Points
  • Improved packaging specifications contribute not only to reduction in logistics costs (transportation, material, and storage expenses) but also to improvement in transportation efficiency and reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • Optimization of packaging specifications will save you the packaging materials and the trouble of disposal of used materials.

There are cases where packaging has been designed for the sake of savings in resources.

Appropriate packaging with improved specifications leads to a reduction in packaging materials to be used (savings in resources), contributing to a reduction in the total logistics costs.
Shown here are environmentally friendly packaging design solutions for saving resources.

The first solution for saving resources reduced the amount of foamed materials used through improving the packaging specifications.

【Saving resources by improving packaging specifications】

Issues

  • The large number of separate materials contributes to many person-hours and a high material cost needed for packaging work.
  • Using foamed materials requires the added burden of welding.

Improvement effects

  • The number of separate materials was reduced from six to three, and the amount of foamed materials used was reduced by about 30%.
  • Elimination of the need for welding foamed materials led to a reduction in person-hours.
  • It reduced materials and processing costs by about 19% in total cost.

The second solution for saving resources utilized returnable packages in delivering goods from overseas to Japan.
We took charge of design, development, and sales of returnable containers and marine transportation from the overseas parts factory to the assembly plant in Japan.

【Saving resources by designing dedicated returnable containers】

Auto part manufacturer A regularly delivered parts manufactured at its overseas factory to auto manufacturer B’s assembly plant in Japan. Manufacturer A was aware of transportation cost from its overseas factory and had requested its regular logistics company to reduce the cost. It had been able to reduce some cost, but these efforts were approaching their limit. Proposing new packaging materials (dedicated returnable containers) and an associated transportation scheme, we contributed to the cost reduction and saving of resources at manufacturer A, as well as to manufacturer B.

Introduction details

  • Replacement of individual cardboard boxes with dedicated returnable containers.
  • Marine transportation from the manufacturer’s overseas factory to the customer (assembly plant of the auto manufacturer) by using returnable containers. Note: The returnable containers are folded and returned to the overseas factory.

Introduction effects

  • Using dedicated returnable containers instead of individual cardboard boxes increased the number of parts loaded into a marine container by about 20%.
  • By using internal packaging materials suited for the shapes of products, the products can be put directly into the production line as soon as it is removed from returnable containers.   The person-hours of unpacking and disposal of used materials was greatly reduced, resulting in cost reductions at manufacturers A and B.
  • Reduced use of individual cardboard boxes led to savings of resources.

Container round use (CRU)

We propose container round use (CRU) using inland depots.
For companies that import and export, we propose CRU that uses inland depots near the import and export locations to streamline inland transportation.

CRU minimizes the delivery distances of empty containers, enabling efficient container forwarding for export and import. CRU also contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions, congestion at ports, and the standby time of drivers.

CRU requires scheduling with exporter, importer, and the shipping company, as well as the coordination of conditions such as container size.

We propose CRU using inland depots.
For companies that import and export, we propose CRU that uses inland depots near the import and export locations to streamline inland transportation.
We can implement nationwide CRU under certain conditions. Please do not hesitate to consult us.
